Help For Single Moms In Alaska

As you look toward raising a child on your own, you likely have many questions. How will you make ends meet? How will you balance parenthood and your career on your own? For single moms in the state of Alaska, the state has several resources that they can fall back on.

Childcare – Childcare is essential for the single mom, since she needs reliable care for her children while she works. The PASS (Parents Achieving Self Sufficiency) program offers childcare assistance to needy families in Alaska, based on income. If your child has a special need, you might qualify for help under the Alaska Inclusive Child Care Initiative. For more information, contact the Alaska Child Care Program Office.

Healthcare – The Denali Kidcare program provides health care for children and pregnant women who meet income guidelines and have insufficient or no access to private healthcare. Low-income families who do not have private health care can get help through the state’s Medicaid program. Moms with a chronic health condition and no healthcare may be able to get medical care through the Chronic & Acute Medical Assistance Program (CAMA).

Food and Supplies – If you are going through a tough time and need a little help to get back on your feet or better your employment situation, you can get cash assistance through the Alaska Temporary Assistance Program also known as ATAP. The Family Nutrition Program offers single moms with help affording nutritious foods through programs like Woman, Infants and Children (WIC), the Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSCF). Some families will qualify for food stamps as well (http://hss.state.ak.us/dpa/programs/fstamps/).

Transportation – If you do not have access to a personal vehicle, learn to take advantage of public transportation. This is an affordable alternative to taking a taxi, and is available in most major Alaskan cities.

Rent Assistance – Having a place to call home is important when raising children. If you are struggling to get enough money together to pay rent, consider taking advantage of the Housing Choice Voucher program or one of the many Public Housing offerings in the state. Learn more about these programs from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation. Keep in mind that Alaska aid programs all point people towards self-sufficiency, so these are temporary programs that help single moms as they work to better their situations.

Educational Grants – One of the best ways to become self-sufficient is to further your education. Find federal help through the FAFSA, then look into the various programs offered through the state. The AlaskAdvantage Education Grant is an excellent one to consider.
