Help For Single Moms In Nebraska

Raising your kids without the benefit of another adult in the home adds a huge financial burden. Single moms often struggle with the basic necessities like rent and food. When you have a tough month or are going through a difficult period, the state of Nebraska has a few programs you might be able to use for help.

Childcare - No single mom can keep a job if she does not know she has a safe place for her kids to be cared for. Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services offers a child care subsidy (http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/chc/ccsubsypa.htm) for certain families based on income. Families with very low incomes can get even greater help paying for childcare through the Aid to Dependent Children program.

Healthcare
– For most families, getting healthcare through employer-sponsored health plans is the ideal solution, but for some single moms this is simply not an option. Low income families may find health care assistance through the state’s Medicaid program (http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/fia/adc.htm). For those who make too much to qualify for Medicaid, the Kids Connection Program may be available.

Food and Supplies – When money doesn’t quite stretch far enough to put adequate food on the table, Nebraska’s single moms can get some help buying food and basic supplies. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offers some needy families a debit-type card they can use to buy healthy food items. WIC is another similar program that allows pregnant and nursing mothers or families with children under the age of five help purchasing healthy food and baby formula. Other options include food banks and charitable organizations that offer healthy food and pantry supplies at a reduced rate.

Transportation – If you are struggling to keep a job because you do not have reliable transportation, take some time to look into the public transportation options in your area. The Transit Directory offers resources to help you find all sorts of transportation options. If there is not one near you, consider splitting the cost of gas with a coworker who can give you a ride.

Rent Assistance – Nebraska partners with HUD to offer a variety of rent assistance options to its neediest residents. From Section 8 housing to subsidized rent programs, single moms who are struggling to keep their homes will find something to help.

College Grants
– To find help in finishing your college degree or starting one from the beginning, file the FAFSA and take any federal aid you qualify for. Then, talk to the financial aid department of the school you will attend. You may find that there are local grants and scholarships designed specifically for single moms like you.
