Nevada State Assistance For Single Mothers

Help For Single Moms In Nevada

Raising your kids is one of life’s greatest adventures, but it is not without its expenses. When you need a little extra help to make ends meet, the state of Nevada has some resources for you.

Childcare – When there is not another adult in the home, access to quality childcare is a must. Single moms often struggle to cover the cost of this care for their children. The Division of Welfare and Supportive Services offers the Child Care and Development Fund. Under this program, qualified families with children under the age of 12 can get assistance paying for childcare, giving single moms the ability to keep a job and better their family’s situation.

Healthcare - If health insurance coverage is not offered at your place of work, or you are currently unemployed, taking your kids to the doctor or facing a medical emergency can drain all of your income. Medical assistance through the state is available to some families. Some qualify for the Medicaid Program,  which covers medical care for families with children under the age of nineteen. Nevada also offers the Child Health Assurance Program (CHAP) to some who do not qualify for Medicaid, and this covers pregnant mothers and children. Both programs are offered based on income.

Food and Supplies – When a family cannot afford to put good food on the table, Nevada’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offers assistance in purchasing nutritious food. Families who have children under the age of 5 may find they qualify for the state’s WIC program as well, which is a supplemental nutrition program. If you are facing a temporary cash shortage but do not qualify for these programs, consider looking for a food bank, like the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

Transportation – When you do not have a vehicle of your own, public transportation is often your best choice for getting to and from work. Look at the RTC public transportation options (http://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/transit/route/). If there is not a route that fits your needs, consider finding someone willing to give you a ride in return for gas money or a service, like housecleaning.

Rent Assistance – Sometimes Nevada’s single moms cannot even find enough money to pay the rent, particularly if they are new to single parenthood. HUD and the state of Nevada have several programs to help (http://portal.hud.gov/portal/page/portal/HUD/states/nevada). Whether you choose Section 8 housing or a housing voucher, you can find an affordable way to keep your family in a comfortable home.

College Grants – Sometimes finishing or getting a degree can make a huge difference in the quality of life for single parent families. To pay for an education, file the FAFSA to check for federal grants and scholarship. Then, look into local grants like those listed here: http://berkley.house.gov/services/resources/student/PayCollege_Grants.html.
