Whether you are struggling to pay your bills or simply need help returning to school, the state of Oregon has several programs and options to help single moms. With these programs, you can help your children be happy and healthy as you transition to the role of single parenthood.
Childcare – For single moms who need someone to care for their children so they can work, affording quality childcare is often difficult. Oregon offers a childcare subsidy program through the Department of Human Services. The DHS will pay a portion of the childcare costs for qualifying families who need a little extra help paying for childcare so they can remain employed.
Healthcare - Low income individuals and families can get help paying for medical care through Oregon’s Medicaid plan. The Oregon Healthy Kids program offers free or low-cost health coverage for children who cannot otherwise get healthcare in the state.
Food and Supplies – When your income cannot stretch far enough to cover all of your expenses, the state of Oregon offers several programs to help. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families gives a cash benefit to struggling families who have children at home. The Food Stamp Program offers help purchasing healthy food. These are both offered through the Department of Human Services. Another program some single moms benefit from is WIC, which provides healthy food.
Transportation – Holding a good job requires reliable transportation. If you do not have a car, look into public transportation options in your area. If this will not offer you the transportation you need, consider carpooling in return for gas money or other services.
Rent Assistance – You do not need to worry about whether or not your children will have somewhere to live. Oregon’s single moms can get help paying for rent through the state’s rental housing assistance programs. These include the HOME Tenant-Based Assistance program and the Low Income Rental Housing Fund. In addition to these programs, consider the rent assistance options offered by HUD.
College Grants – IF you would like to get a degree to help your family as you pursue a career, turn to the Oregon Student Assistance Commission for help in locating a college grant that applies to your situation. In addition to checking this resource, start the grant search by filing the FAFSA. With the many student aid options out there, you may be able to afford to go back to school.
