Tennessee State Assistance For Single Mothers
Help For Single Moms In Tennessee
Single moms in Tennessee may struggle with raising their kids on just one income. Often, simply affording daycare necessary to work becomes impossible when living on one income and raising a family. When times are so tough that important needs cannot be met, the state offers several programs that can help.
Childcare – In an effort to help single moms and other families who cannot afford childcare for their children while they work, Tennessee offer several childcare assistance programs (http://www.tennessee.gov/humanserv/adfam/). Some, like the Recovery Child Care Scholarship Program, are designed to provide help to those who cannot get help through other programs. Others, like the Families First Child Care Assistance Program, offer help to anyone who financially qualifies for the program. Some require a co-pay and all are based on income and family size.
Healthcare – TennCare is Tennessee’s version of the Medicaid and Medicare programs. Through this program, many residents who cannot get health care coverage through work or other means can get managed care through the state. Premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance may all apply, but TennCare offers an affordable option for many single moms in Tennessee who do not have health coverage. TENNderCARE is the state’s coverage option for children, teens, and young adults whose families may not get TennCare.
Food and Supplies – Tennessee seeks to help needy families, like many that have single moms, with their situations through the Families First program. This program offers a short-term cash benefit to help them get through a difficult time. Single moms can also get help buying food through the state’s Food Stamps program and WIC.
Transportation – Single moms in Tennessee will be pleased to know that all counties in the state have public transportation (http://www.tntransit.org/). This offers an alternative for single moms who do not want to deal with the hassle and expense of owning a car.
Rent Assistance – Rent assistance programs are managed by the Tennessee Housing Development Agency. The Housing Choice Voucher program and the various subsidized rental agreements through Section 8 all give single moms an option when they need to look for a place to stay that will not cost more than they can handle.
College Grants – College is becoming more and more accessible to single moms. The Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation offers information about student aid and college grants. Many apply specifically to women, making them ideal for single moms.
