Financial Help: How to Obtain State Assistance for Single Moms
Single moms need all the help they can get when it comes to financial assistance. But obtaining state assistance for single moms can seem like a daunting task. There are so many offices to consider, caseworkers to meet, requirements to obtain, and paperwork to fill out. The entire process can become overwhelming if you let it!
Breaking down information on how to obtain state assistance for single moms is the best way to ensure that you are doing all the right things without all the angst.
Start by calling your Department of Human Services office and ask about setting up an appointment. Some offices will require that you will out paperwork before your appointment is made — if that’s the case, go to the DHS office and fill out what is required of you. It’s usually only a short form that asks for basic information, including family composition, income, and the like.
When you arrive for your appointment, bring all the pertinent information with you. Your caseworker will need to see pay stubs if you have them, social security cards and/or birth certificates, proof of residency, proof of your utility bills and rent, and a statement concerning your situation with your child’s father — whether you are separated, divorced, never married, etc. If you have any court orders pertaining to child support and custody, bring those with you as well.
You might be asked to bring in further documentation, depending upon what you are applying for. Your caseworker will give you a list of what is needed, and you will generally have ten days to provide it. If you think you will have a problem getting the documentation, tell your caseworker immediately.
From that point on, you will get several notices in the mail, all concerning different aspects of your case. If you qualify for government help or assistance, you will get information on that before you leave the office. Open each letter and read it carefully. Call DHS about anything you don’t understand. Don’t wait! The faster you move on your own case, the smoother the process will be.
Those receiving state assistance for single moms will have to “recertify” from time to time. This is simply a way of checking into the situation again to make sure things are the same, and what might have changed.
When you do visit DHS, ask them about all the aid you might qualify for. There could be something you didn’t know was available that could help you and your kids get on your feet. It’s always worth the asking!

Great job! I would definately be more interested in reviewing information on your new web site.
hi my name is trina. i am a 29 year old single mother working a full-time job and returning to school in the spring of 2011. i am not eligible for food stamps in my state South Carolina because i make more than the cutoff- but yet i can barely afford to provide for my 2year old daughter and i. I have just left the Public Housing Authority in Beaufort county- they are unable to help me because of a debt i incurred at a previous address, also a 3 year waiting list!!!! i have been approved through fasfa for my tuition and being i have to work full-time to make ends meet, i can only attend part-time. i am at my wits end! Can somebody please assist me in loans, grants, anything with rent assistance??? im searching online and dont seem to be getting anywhere!!! HELP!!
Trina,
Hey there i was just reading your post that you submitted. I can’t really give you any advice but i know exactly how you feel. I am 23 years old and i have a 3 year old where I also do not receive ANY type of assistance because Berkeley county says i make way too much. I told them between me paying rent/daycare/utilities and what not i dont have a dime to my name after all the necessities are paid for but I guess that is what they are looking for. It amazes me that people i know (by daughter’s father’s other girl) can get everything for not doing anything with their life, but the people like us that actually want to succeed can’t do it because we are set back. I want to applaud you for even starting to go back to school that is a big step especially since you work full time and of course your daughter is your 2nd full time job. I just want to let you know you are not alone and of course you hear that all the time but it is true. It will get better and once you finish school you will be on top of the world. Hope all is well and good luck with everything!!
Amanda
I also am a single mother of 2 girls, working full time and trying to get into the nursing program. The sad thing is that we work, and hard, but if we were to sit at home and pop one baby out after another and not work (which our hard earned tax dollars pay for ) and get free health care while mine has gone up 4 times the amount it was last year. Nothing ticks me off more than when I go to the grocery store and see someone pulling 2 carts full of steaks, shrimp and junk food and then paying with an EBT card and to make it worse, they pull out of the parking lot in a nice car. What is wrong with our world. They give hand outs to people who want to abuse the system but cant help the people who are working everyday to make a difference in their children lives. I am beyond aggravated. I have cut everything out of my life that is not a necessity. I feel for you all. I will keep you in my prayers and wish you luck.
Brenda
Try taking a look at both our financial help and non-profit help for some suggestions.
Thank you very much for the information.
Hi, I am 33 and it drove me nuts seeing all those people abusing the system. I worked on an Air Force Base for 8 years and moved up in great pay after a couple of years but I wasn’t where I wanted to be. I’d get to work around 715 and wouldnt make it home until around 6! I am a single mother of 3 kids and it was hard not being there for my kids as I would like. I depended a lot on my elder parents to watch them until I got out but that was taking a toll on them but how was I suppose to financially support my kids and assist my parents too. I moved back home with my parents to be able to assist in caring for my father, who now attends diaylsis 3 times a week and has a hard time walking. I was exhausted and even though I was at home to watch over my dad, he still had to drive himself to dialysis! I just couldnt get the time from work to pick up him up three times a week. It drove me crazy just thinking that so many people get so much assistance by not working and here I was in a rut. Making $20 an hour but I felt empty. I was still struggling financially, my son, who might be ADHD, was struggling in school and my father, weaker by the days, was still driving himself around and mother who looks so tired physically from all the stress. So I QUIT my job! Yup, biggest decision ever in my life but I was fed up. I knew the job i had was not what I wanted to do forever and with 2 years of some college, I was determined to go back and finish! So here I am now, the same as others, getting govt assistance but I view myself differently, waaay differently. Yes, i do not have a job and yes I get food stamps but it will be temporarily until I finish my nursing degree next year. I kinda laugh at my situation sometimes because here I am on welfare but it will help me in the meantime until I get where I want to be. Its not easy, I quit my job of 8 years in Dec 2010 and I dont have that income to spend on my kids like I did then but nothing compares to the quality time I have now that I didnt have then. So yes I splurge a little when the kids and I go grocery shopping LOL but with Gods strength my kids and I will be well off again hopefully next year!
Wendy
I understand your frustration Brenda. It is messed up they are buying all the wrong food and driving a nice car. Really we don’t know their situation. Who knows. She might be celebrating that its her last time of using the EBT because she landed a good paying job. We really can’t judge on what we see. Me for example. I have a V8 Tahoe and soon might be needing the help from Texas. I’m in a process of getting a divorce from a 8 yr marriage, and I have no job, about to live with my sister, and I have 2 kids. My soon to be ex is going overseas where he can’t bring the car and we can’t afford to sell it. I’m lucky he is going to continue to make the car payments and I can still have transportation. The only income I’ll have is child support. I’m not able to get a full time job because of my work history due to military move so now I’m trying to go to school in hopes of finding something so I’m going to have to rely on gov’t assistant. We may never know the situation.
Your FAFSA should offer you quite a few grants and scholarships through your school. If you need help in addition to that, take a look at all our articles that detail other options like loans and scholarships you could look into.

Nice site! And thanks for commenting on my most recent poem. I will add you to my front page.
What do you do when you’ve struggled for so many years and there really isn’t any help? I’m a single mother of 4, I am going to school online, I have no family, no friends and no support system and I don’t own a car. I get section 8 and recieve $126 in utility help but my bills are anywhere between $250-$350 a month. We’ve gone without water and electric before, longest time was 3 weeks.I haven’t been able to buy them clothes let alone buy them presents. My kids haven’t celebrated any holiday or birthdays in along time, I’ve applied for hundreds of jobs and never recieve that phone call back and getting help from my childrens father isn’t possible. My kids probably won’t see a christmas this year either unless theres a miracle. I’ve debated whether or not giving them up is the best choice for them. I just need a helping hand. I desperately try everyday to remain optimistic and hope a miracle happens. I’m in a bad situation and been everywhere for help, I am at the end of that rope…Where do I turn for help? Any advice? needanangel2010@aol.com
What I’ve done the last few months has helped greatly, i realize you say you have no support system, but maybe if you could find another single mother with one child, and the 2 of you can split rent and the bills down the middle, its not that hard, once you get in the mind set of getting ahead, learning how to live on a budget is really hard, but i have found tiny ways to make my dollars stretch, right down to the kind of TP i buy and how much i buy at once, i buy a specific brand each month in its bulk size, if they don’t have it that week i don’t buy it cuz i bought enough the month b4 that i haven’t run out so i can wait till its stocked, same with laundry soup dish soap toothpaste cereal etc, i only buy what i need and i buy a lot of it, i feed a fality of 5 on $400 a month that’s really good, raising kids is an art form, mastering that art form can be quite a task, but it can happen, just go to your local welfare department and stand up for your self and your child, don’t leave until they help you, don’t let them say no, if they do keep trying, they want people to give up, and if you keep trying you will succeed, i did!
needanangel2010~ Did you check your DHS office and see if they can help you out? And why is the father not paying child support? You should be able to go after him for that. He should be paying on them as he is the father.
It is hard to find a job, but keep after it. Call places and call again. That is the only way you will have a chance.
Angie- thanks for the advice. My sons father is in prison for life and my daughters father should be, he actually threatened to have my house shot up or burned down if i gave his name to child support, he’s flat out told me he doesn’t care about his daughters and that he’s not giving us a penny. I’ve been to the dhs office many times and they just tell me theres nothing they can do unless I’m willing to give up his name, we have plenty of food because i do recieve food stamps, but you cant pay bills or buy necessities with food stamps. I’ve been looking for a job for a long time, most places have switched from paper applications to online applications, I never get phone calls back and when i call them to inquire about my apps, they tell me they will get back to me but never do. There’s many other obstacles in my way and they seem to be making the hardest descision the easiest clear choice for me.
I had to reply to you, cause everyone I tell my situation to they don’t understand what I’m going through! My sons dad was arrested a year ago for a cold case & is only being offered the death penalty, but here I am having to raise his son with no help. His family is so worried about claiming he’s innocent they totally forgot about his son. Then my 10 yr olds dad is supposed to be paying child support, please he just hides his money! Oh and don’t go to the state for help cause they don’t care and since one of my sons dad is “supposed” to be paying child support, I can’t receive anything for my younger son. Everyone has forgotten I gotta be the one to tell his son what he did and why he ain’t around! He already shot me and my whole house up and got 7yrs probation! Obviously, we could talk about our baby daddies & how worthless all states are in helping us at all. If you need someone to talk to that can totally relate to your situation my email is icyunvmybabies@gmail.com. God Bless You!
That is terrible about the dad threatening you like that and to not even care about his own blood. But do not give up your kids. That would be the worst thing you can do. I suggest that you keep your head held high and pray and then one day your life will get better. With god all things are possible. Turn to him. I also suggest seeing about getting a job through your local workforce development center.
Typicaly when you fill out that rediculous form it says somthing along the lines of I don’t wish to pursue him for child support because of the threats or reprocusions it may have on me & my family…it would get you assistance for DHS and you would n’t be in danger. I wouldn’t go as far as to giving your kids up it gets stressful but they need you verry much. it gets extremly stressful many times I know but tomorrow is always another day keep your head up EVENTUALY it’ll get better even if it means they each get one gift for christmas….an empty box filled with love.
hi im a single mother of two boys and this year has been really bad for me.i lost my mom in march and then in aug,my 4 yr old was in a coma and i found out he is a diabetic and since then his health hasnt been good at all.hes on a insilin pump and needs me with him so nothing happens and i dnt really having housing or a job.does any one know what i can do i went to welfar and they said they cant help.
Take a look at our health care section. It has some suggestions of how to get medical help for much lower cost or for free.
I have been a single mother or “head of household” for most of my childrens life, I have a 17yr. Old daughter and a 15yr. Old son, I struggle every day! But there’s help out there I’ve used alot of it myself! There’s all kinds of government help and local help! Try your local churches, salvation army, etc. ask human services for a local assistance booklet that tells what local assistance is in your community,There’s a one time assistance for finances through the government and other programs to help you just have to look and ask around! If you want something bad enogh you will find a way to get it! The CEP program payed for my CNA schooling and uniforms, shoes and a watch for timeing pulse and respirations! They not only helped me into higher pay but gave me confidence that I can make it being a single mother! It’s a challengeing job and every community has home care or facility care that needs workers! I’m barely keeping our heades above water BUT I have to be thankful we are above!
Do’t stay too long working as a cna try and go back to school to be an RN, because right now you’ve seen alot of things. Which means you can take charge and also increase your salary.
Going back to school is always a great way to boost your hiring desirability … and Joy’s right, if you’ve been somewhere for a long time, make sure they know how much you’re worth to them!
FOR NEEDANANGEL2010…… I feel soo bad that u r going thru this tough time. I know that now in these times there are not many jobs out there at all but, things will get better.. did you ever hear the saying “things get worse before they get better”? I never even believed that till it happened to me. I had a bad time a couple yrs back where i got chicken pox at the office i worked at and was hospitalized for 2 wks, when i got home i found out that i lost my job, hit a dog on my way home, spilled coffee all over my floor board of my brand new car, then to top it all off i couldn’t find another job so i lost my new car (repoed), then lost my home so, had to move in with my parents (bad, bad, bad, thing) especially with 3 rambunctious kids. things did get better awhile after. now, I hit another bump. My husband of 14 yrs left me and my kids, left us with nothing, and i have a disability that keeps me from working (trying for disability, it has been 2yrs or more now, but still waiting) he left me because my bills are to high for him to take care of all of us. (what ever happened to till death do us part)? anyways we r having a really tough time, so i can see how hard u r having it. I do get everything from department of children services. which i hate, it is so embarassing for me, I never thought in a million yrs i would b down this rd. I can’t wait till my disability goes thru so, i can actually get a home for us all and get on with my life.it’s very hard living with ur parents they can be soo grumpy, and they think that they r boss all over again. The thing is…my kids like being without their daddy… we r happier now that he is gone and out of our lives for good..he was always yelling, screaming and angry all the time, so i think going thru this tough time will only get better.. I hope! if there is anything i can do to help u please contact me, i will do whatever i can to help u and ur children.. i know our kids did not ask for their lives to be like this, but at least they got u.. they need their mommy to get thru these times just as much as u need them for love and support.my email is wolfekiss131@aol.com please email me.. maybe thru emails we can help each other to get thru these hard times….thank u
Wow I now realize that I am not alone, I am pregnant with my 4th child all by different fathers and none of which have much to do with their children if anything at all I have been sown the child support road and I get nothing. My oldest 2 kids don’t even live with me because of things that have happened in the past. I am living with the child that I’m pregnant with the fathers parents, he doesn’t work due to disability and his criminal record I am on disability but its not enough, I work part time and still its not enough, I have a wage garnishment from past due bills so my paychecks are never more than $290 every two weeks I get about $600 a month from social security want so desperately to be self sufficient and to have a home for my children for once in my life. I am not eligible for food stamps because they say I have too much income its like you have to spend every penny you have for a place to live before you get them and they don’t consider that people have to pay for car insurance and gas to even get to work, I put over $200 a month for just going to work and the doctors in my gas tank. I am just to the point where I just want to give up but I cant accept that my life will be like this forever, I desperately want to go back to school so that I can make a better life for me and my children but I feel like it will never happen.
I would like to know. if someone can help me? I have been calling some agency to help me with a car
Investigate our transportation section – there are some articles in there that could definitely be of help. There are articles in there that detail a whole bunch of options when it comes to getting a free or very cheap car, like credit unions or non-profits.
I know that i am going to come off sounding completely ignorant, but i just don’t know how to go about getting the help i need to go back to school. I am 32 and have been a Mom my whole life. There are so many sites out there that i don’t know which ones are on the up and up or if they are just scams. I want to go for pharmaceutical technician and then on to pharmacist. Is there any way i can get enough grants and loans to where i can go full time and still manage to live? I want to start asap and any help would be much appreciated.
There’s tons of help out there. First off, you need to chose a school, either online or on campus – make sure you’re getting in-state tuition. Then when you’re accepted, you’re going to want to fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which will then tell you what grants and loans you qualify for. Keep in mind this is all done through FAFSA and the school’s websites and offices, you shouldn’t have to go anywhere else. Then, if you end up needing more assistance, I would suggest going through your bank for extra student loans.
Iam a single mom i have raised my 2 disable children 19,@20 all of my life .i need a house for my children soon i will have no were to go can you please help us

I need some assistance in finding grants to aid me in going back to school and debts. I would love to go but I cannot afford the expensive cost. Can someone PLEASE provide some information of how to obtain grants for single moms to return to school and pay off debt?
I am desperate! Thank you very much and God Bless!
There’s plenty of grants and loans to be had out there! Not to mention scholarships – there’s tons of those that go unclaimed because no one takes the time to apply for them. Be sure to file things like your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so you can get grants and other kinds of aid. In addition, you can always take out loans both from the school and from banks. For more information on them, check out our financial aid articles. It will walk you through anything you need to know about the loan process, the different kinds, etc.
There are so many single mothers out there that need help, I am glad that there is a website out there to help them out a little bit.

Take a look at our financial aid section, as well as our education section. The education section should prove especially helpful, since there is information on getting loans, grants, etc. You should have plenty of options to cover this cost, such as school loans. I would also call your son’s school and see what they can do for you. Talk to either the Registrar’s Office or the Financial Office. It is possible they could waive fees, push back your payments, or give you options on how to obtain money for it. If people there refuse to help you, also try the school’s Student Legal Services as well as outreach offices (which should all be free of charge).

There’s plenty of loan help to be had out there! Take a look at these articles, they could be very helpful when considering what loans you want. In addition, once you apply for school and complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), there should be plenty of grants offered to you through your college of choice.

It is nice to know that there are good people who offer help for single moms such as financial assistance and loan grants. This will help them survive the sole or independent role as a mom and a provider.
Finding financial assistance for single mothers can be tough and finding the money for everything you and your kids need can be even tougher. Where can I go to find a sponsor that can help me pay for Sylvan Learning Center? My son really needs this program and I cannot afford the $10k they charge. I am a single mother of two and struggle to take care of them. I work full time but, will probably never be able to afford this program however, I cannot afford not to get my son into this program. My son is struggling in school and his confidence is at a all time low. Has someone found a scholarship or sponsor that can help with this fee?? I’m
I would ask around the school for help before you commit to trying to pay for a $10k a year tutor. Many schools offer tutoring programs that can help kids, and so do plenty of churches. I would even ask around to some of your friends. Maybe they have a child in college that can do some tutoring with your child for much less money.
First of all let us not judge others be thankful for what you have. i know that it is frustrating ,but not everyone abuses the system. some people really need it. you will ever know they may be going through the some changes in there life like you . i work a full time job and am enrolled in school my child gets medicaid and 160 in stamps a month i pay in the system that i take from some of these women hav jobs and pay taxes just like you do just they aren’t making 20 dollars an hour
Keep up the good work! It looks like you’re taking care of yourself!
Hello, my name is Brandie Smith I am a 21 year old female A I went threw a really hard time in the last couple of months do to some terrible losses, that I have not yet been able to recover from.I was renting a house on 296th in Graham Wasington 98338 and On December 1st 2010 I recieved a phone call while I was at work to go home to a house I was renting and went home to a tottal loss. I had lost everything in the house fire it burnt down to the ground. I did not have renters insurance so they said that I could not get help on getting anything back, I even lost my dog Jr. of 10 months old. I had just started my life by getting my own place and I also found out that I pregnant 3 days prior to the fire. Thank god for my Little one or I am not sure how I could stay positive going threw the hard thing I am dealing with. Now I am 24 weeks pregnant and staying on my cuzins and sisters couch I dont have a space of my own and I am also unemployed now . I dont know what to do I am homless and really need help with a start for a home for me and my child. I am in the process of getting a car also cause a week after the house fire a girl ran a red light and tottled my car and that is why I am unemployed do to transportation. So I would really like some help on what I should do I do recieve some help from the state but because of my family size they have not helped me much in the housing department. I cant start a life for my child and myself when we dont even have a perment place for us to call home. My son in due on July 17th 2011 and it is starting to come closer to that time and I am getting scared. So with any helpful information for housing help that would be wonderful.
Thank you for you time and concern,
Brandie A Smith
I would check into some government programs first. Often, there’s a wait list of at least a couple months, so the sooner you get your name on the list, the more chance there is you’ll get help by the time your son is born. Also check out some non-profits and churches in your area – they can often help with both cars and housing. Check in with some credit unions in your area about your car, and see what programs they have for transportation for single mothers.
Brandie:
Most towns have an organization that is there to help people find affordable housing. In the town where I live it is called Neighbor to Neighbor. If you check with your local housing authority you will find that they will be more than willing to help you get through the tuff times. They designate the housing order according to the need. Where you are with child you might find that they will place you immediately. Hope this information is of use to you.
BJ is right, everything is done according to need, so when you’re filling out an application, include anything you think could possibly be relevant to showcasing your need more, and therefor getting bumped up the list faster!
