My name is Brandi and I'm 22 years old. I am a single mother of 2 and one on the way. I seperated from my babys dad approx 5 months ago. I have been struggling to pay my bills and keep food in the cabinets. I have tired myself on the internet looking for resources... and I'm hoping someone else has had better luck than myself. I've tried the grant road and it just seems like a joke... I'm not one to ask for help but I don't know what else to do. I guess the holidays don't make life seem much happier. If anyone knows anything I'd appreciate the information more than you'd know! Thanks.

Hello Brandi,
I would recommend calling your local Human Services Department. They have a number of programs for families in need including the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), where they provide temporary assistance in paying energy bills, and the TANF program (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Welfare is also a program under the Human Services Department.
To apply for a welfare program you must contact the local Human Service Department located in the government pages of the phone book. It may be listed as Human Services, Adult and Family Services, or Family Services. An appointment is made with a case worker. The case worker will give a list of required documents needed at the appointment. Common documents asked for are proof of income, ID, and utility bills or other proof of residency.
Once an appointment is completed a case worker will review all required documents, applications and information provided at the meeting. They will use this information to determine your eligibility.
Someone at Human Services may also be able to give you other suggestions, once you have explained your circumstances.
Good Luck!

I agree with everything Sally has said, and let me throw in a few other options as well:
If you are having trouble keeping food in the house, visit your local food bank. They are usually run by churches or social service organizations in your area, and they can give you enough food to last for several days while you wait for food stamps or other assistance to kick in.
You said you are separated...he should be paying some sort of child support. If you don't have a legal separation in place, now is the time to get one. You should also talk to your child support office about what options are available to you.
I mentioned churches before...they are great sources of help. They can help you with food, warm clothes for the winter, and other assistance. Some community organizations in your area might be able to help with electric or gas bills in order to keep your home heated. The Civitans, the Lions Club, the Masons, and many other places are happy to help if they have the funds to do so. You will have to call around to find resources.
Also, if any of your children are in school or daycare, the schools often have resource centers that can help you out.
Emergency services like food banks and food pantries are meant specifically for people like you, who suddenly find themselves in a bad situation. Take advantage of them! And as you are doing that, do what Sally suggested and turn to DHS. Much of the assistance you need will start right there.
Good luck! :)
