Default Single mother to beatiful twin girls!

First off I want to say hi!

I am a stay at home mom with two beautiful twin girls. They are my life. I will do anything for them.

I have been living with my parents every since they were born, its a struggle. I have been contemplating leaving, but they dont want me to move until I have secured a job. I have a degree, however, most hospitals are asking for over a year of experience in my field. I would volunteer but I feel that I need to work.

I am wondering what resources would be the best to use. I am on medical assistance and food stamps already. I am looking for job assistance, rent assistance, day care assistance.

Their father has come back into their lives recently. We want to move together and make it all work for all of us. He wants me to move with him in a house, but its disgusting, and not right for my girls. So we have concluded that we want to get an apartment or rent a house.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Madeline

    Hello Madeline,

I think that you should do either some volunteer work or look for an internship. Some internships do pay, but it depends on your circumstances. You have already tried it your way, and that hasn't worked so far. There is currently a large number of people who are unemployed, so there is a long list of applicants for most jobs. In competing against other job candidates who have experience, there will be little motivation for a hospital to hire you preferentially. You want to give yourself every opportunity, so spending a year getting that experience, is a little side step in your career path that could move your name up significantly in the list of candidates.

To find internships, you can Google phrases like healthcare internships in Boise, ID, or nursing internships in Kansas City, KS. I don't know what area your degree is in, or what jobs you have been applying for. You can also contact hospitals and ask them about doing an internship with them. When your internship is over, they will know what your qualifications are because they gave you your experience, and will more than likely hire you on.

There is some potential assistance for you with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). They do have a career center, although most of their job locations are in Washington, DC and Maryland (I don't know where you are located). The DHHS does also offer assistance in paying for childcare, and assistance in paying utility bills through their Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) state programs. This is a map of the U.S., so click on your state to get the contact information for your local office.

I have included a link that offers information on state aid and assistance programs, including help paying rent, and employment assistance and counseling.

    Good luck!

    ~Sally~
