Cars for single moms is a very important part of making ends meet. You need to work to pay the bills, and you need a car to get to work, daycare, and other essential places. But finding cars for single mothers can be tough on a limited income.
There’s the car itself, and then there’s car insurance, gas and maintenance. It’s enough to make your head spin. If you’re having trouble purchasing a vehicle, getting a loan, or need reliable help with transportation, we have a few ideas to help you out.
First, consider this: Do you really need a car? If you live in a city, you might not. Public transportation can usually get you everywhere you need to go. You’ll lose the convenience of having your own car, but it’s worth it when you see how much money you’re saving. Purchase a frequent-rider pass for reduced fares.
If you’ve decided that you need your own vehicle, look somewhere other than a dealership to purchase your car. Habitat for Humanity takes donated cars for single mothers and sells them for reduced prices. It’s a great place to find cars for single moms.
You should also check the paper or CraigsList.com to look for used cars. You could also write a post on Craigslist.com explaining your situation and saying that you’re looking for an affordable, reliable automobile. You never know who will read it-maybe someone has a car they were going to sell but would rather it go somewhere it’s really needed, and they might offer their free cars for single moms.
You could also check with car rental companies-they occasionally have rental cars for sale. Just be sure to have a mechanic inspect any used vehicle before you buy it. Some unscrupulous sellers will offer cars for single mothers that quickly break down, so they can get more money from your repair bills.
Don’t forget to check with your local Social Services agency, credit union, or any related non-profits in the area. Many times credit unions will design loan programs that offer single mothers help with transportation.
More often than not, a vehicle means the difference between a single mom receiving government aid or not because of her ability to get to work. Agencies know this and many will take extra steps to help you on your quest to find a car.
Use the power of the internet to help you, too. Search for automobile grants and loans for single moms. You might be able to find programs that offer free cars for single mothers if you meet certain need criteria.

how can i go about that i am a single mom of one coming from a bad situation any advise?
I am a single mother of 3 beautiful children with a fourth due in march. I went through some really tough times after my husband and I seperated. I never knew what it was like to need or want for things and best of all was able to do for my children. That has all changed drastically now. I mad some bad chooses and now that I have lost everything I don’t know where to begin. I feel as if the harder I try to fix things there is always something that gets in the way. My babies deserve so much more. I am in the process of losing my apartment, I lost my car, and all I want to do is go finish my nursing degree, work, so I can get a place to live but no transportation stops just about everything that needs to be done to get to where I need and want to be. I have no one to go to for help. I feel as if all my hard work of trying to better my life is doing nothing but making me more depressed that I can never fix what I messed up. I feel so worthless and I don’t deserve such wonderful kids. I have the want and the drive just need a little push.
First off, look at our transportation section. Hopefully they’ll give you some options you didn’t previously think of and you’ll be able to find a credit union, non-profit, or other program that can help you locate a free or low cost car. Also, I’m sure there are some programs that could help you to get back into school. Our education articles could certainly help you out there if you need information on schools, grants, loans, etc.
I am a single mother of a beautiful 2 year old daughter who deserves the world. Unfortunately, like most of us, are unable to give it to her. I know that providing the world is impossible, but its even the little things that I am unable to provide. I was a full ride scholarship basketball and volleyball player who was on her way to play in Kansas but was suddenly hit with pneumonia and almost lost my life. After 3 months in a hospital, 6 weeks in a coma, 40 plus blood transfusions, 9 events of my lungs collapsing, multiple seizures, one stroke, 2 flat lines, being on dialysis and life support, I can say that I am so thankful to be alive. However, I am no longer able to play sports. Therefore I cannot afford school because I no longer have my scholarship. Since it is just me and my daughter because her father chose to not be in our lives, I struggle to make ends meet. I’m on food stamps, medicaid, barely any ssi, but that’s not even close to paying the rent. I just want to be able to go to Massage Therapy School of Denver and be secure with daycare and my rent. The program is only 7 months and 97% job placement guarantee. If anyone out there can help me achieve this certification, you’d be making my life and future better as well as my daughter’s who is the most important. Thank you for taking time to read
.

I am a single mother of 4 children my oldest son is 11 yrs old, i have a 7, 6, and a 4 yr old. me and my children are staying with my sister at the moment. The truth is that I need a car to take my kids to school and to go and find a job. I dont have a GED. yet so is really hard to find a job. my husband and I are seperated. And now I have to provide for the need of my children. The wores part of all is that my husband want to take my kids away from me and take them to another country, I dont want to loose my children so please help me to get a car to do the tings I need to do for my children.
Thank you.
Look into our transportation articles. There’s plenty of programs that can help with this, like credit unions or non-profits. Be sure to look up programs specific to your area as well.
My name is Lacey. I am a single mother of three angels, that I feel so blessed to have every day they make the worst situations always worth fighting through. Unfortunately I was in an automobile accident, which caused many physical impairments, and as a result, I am now jobless and working on physically and mentally healing from the head trauma. After the accident I lost my job, and lost everything. I can not get to any appointments for me or my children, because there is not a bus system that transports from where we live and have little support due to being new to the area. A vehicle would change our lives, allow the appointments to be made and the therapy to be completed to that i can be the mother that I want and am so capable of being if I could just get a vehicle… finish healing…. finish training and be back to work to move forward in a positive direction for our future.. God Bless You All..
The articles on transportation for single moms have a good amount of information on them about how to get cars for very cheap or free. They direct you to a lot of different places you can try, like Craigslist.com, non-profits in your area, or credit unions.
I recently had my car repossessed and I have a 2 yr old and a 9 month old. I am currently working and would like to continue doing so but I have to have a way to get here. I had to file backruptcy in 2009, when I was let go from my job that I was on for 6+ yrs and I didn’t put my car on there.
How do I find out about the free car program?
I am a single mom and have recently lost my job and am facing eviction. I am desperate and in serious need of a car to be able to apply for jobs and support myself and my kids. I have worked for the last 15 years and when my ex moved out my oldest became very angry and couldn’t handle school and I lost my job. I’ve never had to ask for help and I’m embarrassed and feeling all alone
Don’t be embarrassed, there’s no shame in needing help. Take a look at our articles on transportation options, as well as on non-profits. The both sections of articles can tell you all about different programs, like credit unions, Social Services, and craigslist.com

First off, I would suggest checking out both our financial planning for college, and planning strategies. There’s a great article in the planning section that details tricks and ideas you may not have thought of to make your schooling experience a bit easier on you. In addition, if you do try going back again, ask for help from the school – many offer free tutoring in harder subjects, and you can always ask a teacher, TA, or classmate for help as well. I’d also suggest checking out our transportation articles, as they list alternatives or programs that provide cars to single moms for free.
I pray for all single moms (and dads) daily.
It is not only a daily struggle of faith, it is a constant
tearing of the heart. My children deserve so much more
than this. I am a victim of circumstance due to a bitter divorce.
I am not afraid to work; in fact, I desperately want to work. I am
a hard worker. I am honest and trustworthy. Currently, I do not
have a car or a place to call home. My family all live in Canada and
I am very alone. I appreciate and welcome your help, and will
gladly help others if I can. Thank you.
I would like to know more about the free car program
You can get information on that here. You may also want to research some non-profits, as many of them can be of help in this area too.
Need more info about free/cars for single moms very interesting email me more info thanks.
For help, you can take a look at our transportation information, as well as investigating some non-profits that could be able to help with the situation.
I have had the worse luck loosing the ones I love I have four daughters and one on the way well I had to do it on my own their father passed away and I am 33 weeks pregnant we barely got a place to live and we have no way of getting to the simplest places as like the grocery store and now that the weather is bad and the bus line don’t run over in this area I don’t know what to do don’t know how to get to point a to b. and it isn’t fair to my kids why we struggle so bad and having no car makes it even worse where do i find help at?
I don’t know if you’ve seen this on our site, but there’s some information about transportation here. You can also look for assistance from non-profits, for things like groceries – we have some suggestions on our non-profit assistance page. Good luck, and I hope everything works out for the best!
I am a single parent of a six month old boy. I am currently unemployed but am attending college. Right now it is extremely difficult to get my son to his WIC and doctor appointments. His father is not around, he calls every few weeks so he doesn’t look bad to his currently pregnant girlfriend but has never even bought diapers for his son. My mom and dad help support us, but right now they are struggling with a car too. I would be so much appreciable if you could help me and my son! Please and Thank you!
For cars, look into our transportation assistance articles. It gives you a lot of options you may not have thought of, like credit unions or non-profits. Also, while you’re in school you may want to consider taking out some loans just to defray costs a little bit. Often, student loans have the lowest interest rate and you won’t have to worry about paying them back until you graduate. You can get extra information on different kinds of loans and how to get them in our education articles.
I am a single mom and I really need a car because I’m living in chicago with my parents & there are only few transportation cars.
I want to know more about the free car program for single moms so that I can avail it.
yes i am a single mother of four kids in need of a car or truck i was buying one and they repoyed it because the girl i was getting it from didnt make the payments so we have none know. And i have two kids that have to go to doctor one back and forth to kc the other to doctor around joplin and we have to walk and i am not in the best health to keep doing that so if someone can help please let me know at 417 540 2416
I am a teen mom in foster care and i cant really get a job right now but i need a car badly and i have no idea where to start i need to get a car since I’m going to college next December.
Can I avail this car loan event though I am unemployed right now? I am looking for a new job and it so hard commuting myself road by road. I guess if I’ll be having a car, it will be easier for me to transport.
I want to try this car loan. Before, I was able to avail a company car loan, yet it takes me many years because the interest is very high and it is being deducted to my salary. Is this type of car loan now commits high interest too? How will I know the progress of the loan if I avail it? Is it also deducted in my salary or I will be the one to personally pay for it? Need more details please…
My daughter is a hardworking single parent of 3 daughters, which 2 is honor roll students and 1 is the principal scholar these girls has maintain there honor roll status throughout school years. 1 will be graduating this year, one is a freshman and the other is 5th grader anyone knows of any organization that will supply these girls with laptops. there mother is unable to purchase due to all the other bills she is paying. will truly appreciate it if i could get these laptops for the girls.
There are plenty of scholarships out there that provide free laptops, so try looking into some of those. Also, colleges can sometimes provide them, or they can always check one out from the library.
Aside from this car loan matter, are there any help for free car maintenance? For us single moms, it also adds to our expenses.
Try looking into mechanic schools, or high school mechanic classes. They are often looking for people to volunteer their cars so the students can get practice working on them, and it’s free.
I am working a part time job and looking for a good car cheap, i need my job as its the only income for my children and myself. If anyone could help us out thanks it would mean alot and maybe keep us from losing our home.
I would check out local charities, as well as credit unions. They often have free car programs, or at least very cheap payments!
i am a single teen mother to a 3 yr old boy..i am still in high school graduate in june….i just recently was in a car accident…now i am haven trouble getin a car i jus bought a car from an old friend but bein a single full time student mother i dont have time to work other babysiting to afford putting the car n my name an gettin the tag an insurance does any body no a number i can call for help please email me at lilmommy15@hotmail.com please an thank u…
Unfortunately, I am not aware of any programs that will take care of fees like that for you. You may want to check with the Department of Human Services – they would probably be your best bet. There are quite a few programs that can help you get a free or extremely low cost car, however. You might want to check into local churches or non-profits to see if any of those can help you with fees, but credit unions often offer the actual car on different programs for those in need.
I am 22yrs old n I am a single mother of 3 wonderful boys I am havin a real hard time right now I really need some help I have no car just started a job few days ago have no apt or anything n I have no family to turn too and help me I need a car so bad so I dont lose my job. Its so hard havin to walk to n from work with 3kids I need alot of help if anybody knows of anything I can do please let me know
Ask around to habitat for humanity and other non-profits and charities in your area first off to see what they can offer. Also look into car rental places for extremely cheap used cars, or credit unions for prgrams that are designed for low income families to get cars.

My name is Karissa, I am a 20 year old single mom of a 3 year old name Ruben. I want to be able to better myself and to do that I need a car to get to daycare, doctor appt. and to continue my apprentership for Hair and makeup beautician to become state certified but I am ready to just quit because the stress and hardship to find rides every where is wearing me down. I just need a car that I can pay off with smaller than normal car loan payments, with no money to put down. Or if there is a resource that has donated cars to give to single moms struggling. Please help me I am running out of hope.
Karissa, sorry to hear that you are in such a situation. Here a website http://www.singlemomfinancialhelp.com/assistance/state just click on your State’s thumb nail. There will be information on cheap car loans and hosing assistance (if you need). Have you tried going to those buy here pay here places. Sometimes you will be able to find a place that will work with you, being that you will be paying them directly. Good luck to you. Keep your head up. Things have a way of working themselves out.
If you live in PA, and are receiving any type of public assistance, contact your caseworker. If you have a valid driver’s license, have a job or have been offered a position that requires a car, and you are able to prove that you can’t get there without one, you may qualify for the special allowance. Its only $750 to purchase or repair a vehicle. But something is better than nothing! !! They will not tell you about it, you have to let them know. You can also request this assistance for an emergency housing situation. I’m not certain what the maximum amount is, but it’s to prevent eviction. If you would like additional info just post and I will reply. I too, am a single mother and have struggled, but the Lord has sustained me, and with faith and hardworking, I was even blessed to work as a Service Coordinator for the Welfare to Work program
So I worked for the system I once had to rely so heavily on. God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all we can ask or think! !! God Bless you all and remain encouraged.
Erica,

Virginia,
Unfortunately, I do not know of any services out there that help woman that are not citizens. I am sure there are, but I have been searching all morning and have found nothing. Try an organization called, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). You have to be a citizen for their benefits, but I am sure they can direct you to another organization that can help you. I hope some single moms that read this have some answer for you. If you do find an organization, please let me know, so I can forward the information on to other mothers like yourself that seeks help on this site. Best of luck to you!

I agree. Transportation to school or work can be hard. Maybe try buying a used car or saving up for one. Or for the the time being, you can try using public transport like a bus or light rail.
Hello, my name is Ronnicka Cooper,im 18, and I am single mom of a soon to be 7 month old baby girl, who has mandatory doctors and wic appointments to go to. Hello I am a single mom of five. I will be starting Chiropractic school in the fall. I will take me 6 hours round trip to get to and from school on the bus. The program is so rigorous that I might fail out due to exhaustion. Is there any programs out there that will help single moms obtain a car for transportation
There are lots of transportation services available, you just need to know where to find it.
I am a mother of 3 and i have no way to take them to schoo and doctors appts i need help please
For the time being, you can try public transport, and when you find a good car you can buy, go for it!
I AM GRATEFUL FOR THIS SITE BECAUSE I NEVER KNEW ABOUT A SITE THAT IS TRYING TO BETTER US SINGLE PARENTS THAT NEED SOME HELP TO GIVE NOT ONLY US A LITTLE HELP BUT OUR CHILDREN ALSO. THANK YOU GOD.

Hey im a single mother that struggles also. My children are very dear to me and i dont like for them to hurt or to be embarressed. I work and plan on going back to finish college and my income is NOT enough to help out at all.
I’m a single mom of four kids. Two years ago I left an abusive marriage with only what I could take with me, including an old car that broke down 4 months ago and I haven’t had the money to get it fixed yet. My brother took us in when we had no place else to go but now he is telling us that we need to get out by the end of October which would leave us homeless. My oldest son who is 20 was able to buy a car just before my car died, however, because he does not have his drivers license it is in my name and I have been using his car to take him to work and taking my other children to doctors appointments and my second oldest to his therapy. All that changed because just tonight as I was driving to my boyfriends for the weekend with my children the car died and left us stranded on the side of the road. Thankfully my boyfriend was able to come and get us, however, I am now without a car. A mechanic said that antifreeze got into the engine, most likely when my brother changed the head gasket. Now due to my brothers negligence I do not have a car to take my son to work and he will lose his job, my kids will not be able to go to their doctors appointments and I will be unable to continue my job search and be able to travel to the grocery store for food. We live in the country where there is no public transportation and the need for a personal mode of transportation is extremely important. I know my brother with the state of mind that he is in now, wanting to kick us into the street will not help nor will he take responsibility for the car breaking down. I do not know what to do as I desperately need a vehicle to take care of my kids.

Being a single mom you can receive a car at a fairly reasonable and affordable price and receive
grants for single moms to pay for it.
I’m of widow as of this year. My husband passed away in May and we share 5 kids together, ages 3-13. I’m receiving Survival benifits for my kids and I, I need transportion where I live at. I need a car to get them back and forth to appointments and to take care of other business. Do anybody know of places that can help me get a car at a reasonable price or that just can help ?
Check Craigslist.com or other auction sites, but do make sure that you be weary of scams and frauds. Make sure you look for a car that is close by your area so that you can physically check the car out. Also check out the car evaluation to make sure you are paying a reasonable price.
I’m a single mother of 2, a 10yr old and a 3yr old. My car has been in the shop for 6 months now. I haven’t been able to pay what I need to pay in order to get it fixed. I still owe $800 on it to get my transmission fixed. I’ve been having a hard time getting to and from work and it’s fixing to get harder since the person who has been taking me is fixing to quit. Is there anything here that can help me pay off my repair bill so I don’t lose my job?
