Help For Single Moms In Georgia

Caring for children is a challenge no matter what life brings your way, but when you do not have the support of a father in the family, it makes life just a little more challenging. Georgia’s single moms will find that the state offers a variety of resources that help them get on their feet and give their children the warm, safe environment they deserve.

Childcare – Children need a safe, structured place to go while mom works. If you cannot afford to pay for childcare, the Division of Family and Children Services offers subsidized child care assistance. The help is offered to children up to the age of 13 or the age of 18 if they have special needs. Other affordable options include a babysitting co-op or swap with other area mothers or finding daycare in the home of someone you trust.

HealthcareMedicaid is Georgia’s primary healthcare assistance program for low income families. However, if you do not qualify for Medicaid and do not have healthcare for your kids, you might be able to get coverage for your uninsured children through the PeachCare program. Coverage is based on income, but the income guidelines are more generous with PeachCare than with Medicaid.

Food and Supplies – Putting food on the table is a constant struggle for single moms, and often they cannot choose the most healthy food options. The state has a few programs to help struggling families get healthy food on the table. The primary program is the Food Stamps program (http://www.dfcs.dhr.georgia.gov/). Families with preschoolers can get supplemental nutrition through Georgia’s WIC program as well (http://health.state.ga.us/programs/wic/).

Transportation – Georgia has several public transportation options that offer an affordable way to get to work. Find out where your local bus station is and what route will best fit your needs at http://www.georgia.gov/.html.

Rent Assistance – Georgia wants to make sure that all children have a safe, comfortable home to live in. As such, they offer rental assistance and other housing programs through HUD (http://www.dca.state.ga.us/housing/RentalAssistance/index.asp). Programs include the housing voucher program and subsidized apartments.

Educational Grants – Returning to school is easier than ever with online colleges and night classes. You can get help paying the bill as well. Start by filing the FAFSA to apply for federal student aid options. Then, contact the financial aid department of the school you wish to attend to find out about any grants or scholarships they might know about, specifically those for single moms. Finally, check out the Georgia Student Finance Commission (http://www.gsfc.org/) to learn about local scholarships.

Hi, I came across your website while trying to help someone locate transportation and I wanted to make you aware of our resources at Quality Care for Children. We have a free referral system for parents all over Georgia who are looking for Quality Early Child Care, we can give referrals for chidcare centers in your area or family child care providers and even summer camps. The number is 877-all-ga-kids or you can go to http://www.allgakids.org for an online referral. We also offer scholarships for child care providers for those pursuing their CDA’s. In addition we also have an Emergency Child care program that helps struggling parents pay for child care while they seek employment, recover from an illness, or face a crisis. We would love to be included on your website as a resource for single moms since a majority of those we help are single moms struggling to make it on their own. The last thing a single mom needs to worry about is the quality of the care her children are receiving while she is trying to provide a living for her family. Thank you for your service and I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Mary Emily

Hi I need help. I am a single 43 year old mother. Early in my life as a wife of a military man and mother of 3. I devoted all of my self to my family. Now that I am divorced I am finding it impossible to further my career. I would love to go back to school but with no job or income I worry about how I will provide for myself and 15 year old child. I know there are many grants for school but are there any that will help me cover my home expenses while I am in school? I am not looking for a hand out but I do need a fresh start. Is there any help out there?

If you need some help for housing, take a look at this information. Also, it is possible to use many school loans and grants to cover personal expenses if you truly have to. They do have very low interest rates, and can sometimes be the best option. Try going to your school of choice and asking for information from their adult or parent student services. They might have quite a bit of help and information for you as well.

My daughter is adhd and shows signs of other problems. Her school doesn’t work with me. I need to get her tested for other disorders. I reapplied for peachcare 03/04/11 pending response for tesring. I am a single mom with no car to get my daughter to testing , appointments, therapies if needed and sports to keep her over active energy down. It takes way too long by bus. Are there locations to help single moms with at least car down payments or a used car? How can I send needed info to see if my daughter qualifies for medicaid or peachcare due to her condition and. Possible other conditions. She has a 504 but evidently should have had a iep a long time ago. I need help with free sports and other activities to keep my daaughter busy and food but I don’t ualify for food stamps. I am taking care of seven people but dfac doesn’t consider my sons since grown but jobless so I help them too. I need any help that I qualify for. My daughter is 13. She also has hadnight terrors and sleep walking for years. Other daughter horrible eczma. Help.

Hello Rhonda,

the school is obligated to test your child for free for you, if you can get her to the pediatrician they can also set you up with a free clinician that can test her. i know things are hard especially if you have no vehicle, but if you are the kind of mother I think you are, there will be no stopping you from helping your child.

Each school district also has a therapist and a special education advisor, all you have to do is demand a meeting with them and your daughter’s teacher.

Good Luck

Hi, My name is Shaheerah. I am a 23 year old single mother of 3. I have been seeking employment for over a year now and has had no luck. I have ran out of all my savings, which was supplying us with needs and shelter. Now, that I am pretty much dead broke. I have no family here and I really need some type of assistance with keeping a roof over my children head without having to live in a homeless shelter. I am currently taking college classes online, due to having no childcare for my youngest. I do not receive child support or any other funds. All, I really need is housing assistance.. Please help me!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nikki April 1, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Hello Shaheerah,

I feel your pain, i spent the last 8 months of 2010 being unemployed, and i have a child who is insulin dependent. Most of my savings went to medical expenses for my child. I know that churches used to give assistance, but i think that most of them are having problems of there own.

Try contacting (http://www.dca.state.ga.us/housing/RentalAssistance/index.asp). maybe they can assist you. I usually do not recommend taking out a personal loan, but since you are in college you may qualify.

Seek assistance from you college, even though you are going to school on-line they still have student services. I know that these are things you may have already tried, but be persistent and someone is going to help you. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, remember we can conquer all things, through Christ who strengthens us. Keep your head up (I know how hard it is, but your children are looking up to you). Be blessed.

Husband left us with no money and doesn’t even send anything. I’m having to live at home again with my parents who are helping me till i can start working again but that won’t be till after the baby is born then all my money will be going to divorce court. Is there anything that could help me in getting my degree?

Hello June 9, 2011 at 11:58 am

I went back to school (online) with 3 kids. Its works because I can stay at home with my kids, and go to school on my own time. All you have to do is make sure you turn in your work on time/study. You don’t have to attend the actual class, you can listen to them on your own time. Try Colorado Technical University Online or any online classes, most schools offer them.

Denise June 10, 2011 at 7:55 am

Online classes were the best option for me also. I loved taking online classes. I got to work at my own pace and studied when I had the time to study. Personally, I believe that online classes is the best way to go for single (or stay at home) moms when it comes to returning to school. One, important tip though, time management. Make sure you manage your time correctly.

I am a single mother of two small children. I live in a small town and I’d like to relocate to a city with more opportunities. I haven’t the slightest idea what to do to get myself started achieving my goals. I would like to work from home so that strangers aren’t raising my kids while I’m trying to provide. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Hi I am excited to say that I have gone from being a substitute the last two years to finally a permanent teacher. The only downfall is that I will no longer qualify for childcare assistance for my two year old twins and five and six yr old son and daughter. Although I will be making better money, all of it will be going to childcare. I will be paying over 1800 a month. Im in search of grants or scholarships that will help me pay for childcare. Anything will help!

Denise August 1, 2011 at 5:14 pm

Glad to hear that! And yes, there are many childcare assistance companies and organizations. Good luck!

First of all, thank you for putting together this website. The links provided are definitely helpful. Myself, I am a 30 year old single mother of an amazing 11 year old boy (who also does not receive child support.) We recently relocated to Oconee County, GA after having multiple problems with the Fulton County, GA school system. While I have the help of people that care about me to keep a roof over our heads while I am job searching I would like to seek out opportunities to further my education, now that I live only a handful of miles from UGA. My question is, is it worth my time? I am positive that student loans are available, but I don’t think I want to go that route as I have struggled for many years to become debt free. I am just not sure that someone like me will qualify for grants. Must you be destitute is my question. I’ve never made any kind of real money but I’ve also never qualified for any government assistance, in the realm of medical or food aid. Any thoughts you have are most appreciated.

Thank you

I am a single mom of two teenagers (17 & 16) and as most of you know times are hard now with the cost of gas, food, and everything else rising with no raise in your income. I have student loans, car payments, rent and utilities that need to be paid on top of gas in both vehicles (one is for my daughter – that I had to buy from her father) along with maintenance on both vehicles. I am desperate for some assistance with getting bills either consolidated, or lowered in order to pay them monthly and have money for food and gas. Also, i am not receiving child support yet, have to get all this worked out in court. But as you know one must not depend on child support to help with bills. All I am asking is that I get some relief, get my bills caught up so I can pay them each month on time. I am looking for a house/trailer to rent that I will be able to afford on my income as well. Thanks for any assistance I can get to get me caught up and on my feet so I can pay each month what is owed.

I fled from an abusive situation in Pennsylvania. I have an elementary aged daughter and I have successfully rented a safe apartment. The problem is my daughter and I are forced to sleep on the floor with no furniture. I left everything behind to get out of that situation. I cry at night because I’ve taken her out of one bad situation from another. (although sleeping on the floor is under no circumstances compared to what we’ve been through) I have been here a month and obtained housing and a part-time job. I am trying my hardest to get it together. Does anyone know of a place in Savannah, GA that can help me with basic necessities? Please.

Hello, my daughter is 16 and getting ready to have her baby in about a month. I want to do everything possible to keep her in school after the baby is born and we have been looking into her going to Phoenix High School where she can take her baby to school with her and still get the education she needs. The problem is getting her to school since she doesn’t drive yet, have a car and I go into work at 7:00 in the morning. Since I leave so early to get to work I have no way to get her there unless they will let her come in around 6:30 am. I don’t think that is possible since classes do not start until a little after 8 am. Is there any transportation that would be available to help me get her and the baby to school? Thanks so much for any suggestions you might have.

I am almost 22 years old. I have a beautiful son who will be 18 months old this month. I was married to his father but we got divorced earlier this year and his parental rights were taken away. So I dont get any child support. I got married again to someone else soon after the divorce and now I am getting divorced again. I feel like all Ive ever done is make mistakes in my life. I am not proud of the choices I have made. Its time I do whats best for myself and my son. I have applied to go to college but I am still waiting to hear back from the school. My son and I are living with my mother, my step father and my little brother. I want more than anything to get on my feet and be able to support myself and my son on my own. Its just really hard being a single mother. My family doesnt want us living here. I feel like they are doing anything they can to get us to leave. They keep holding my past against me when all I want to do is move forward with my life. I feel like in order to succeed and get done what I need to do, I dont need to be living here. Its been really hard on me emotionally. Does anyone know of any housing/school/childcare assistance? Ill take anything I can get.

Hi, I am a seperated mother of three children. Getting a divorce in January hopefully, been seperated for three years. I am in need of help trying to get my life back in order. I plan on going back to school in January, but I have one child that is still at home she is 3 years old in December. I have one child that is severe adhd and the other one has severe adhd, Odd( difiency disorder) and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Right now we are living with my parents in a very cramped up house, my kids need their own space very badly. I have no car, so I am having to depend on my mom to take me anywhere’s I need to go and than she gripes about it when she does. I need some help on getting basically everything from a house or apartment and transportation. I have driver’s license but nothing at this point to drive. I have looked at section 8 almost everyday, but they are closed to new applicants and don’t know what else to do. Everybody keeps telling keep living with your parents, but they don’t know what goes on behind close doors. Its hard living here with three hyper active children, and the arguements that are continuous to where my children have no respect for me at all. I can’t find a job because I am depending on her. And that is what I don’t want to keep doing. I am 31 years old now and it’s time for me and my kids to be a family. Is there anyone that could either help or give suggestions or even both it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and happy holidays

Hello, I am a single mother of 2 beautiful children. I work a full time job, which doesn’t pay much. I receive child support but it isn’t enough either because more than half of the support was taken from my children and given to my ex’s other child from another relationship. I am having severe transportation issues and want to know if there is any sort of program here in Georgia that will assist me with purchasing a reliable used vehicle.

Reply

Denise December 26, 2011 at 8:46 pm

Yes, transportation can be hard. There are many free cars that you can get or even some cars that are available for very reasonable prices. You just need to keep looking around until you find the best one.
