Help For Single Moms In Kentucky

Sometimes when you are the only one caring for your kids and providing for their physical and financial needs, you need a little extra help. Kentucky provides several programs designed to aid single moms who are struggling to make ends meet.

Childcare – whether you are going to head back to school to better your financial situation or simply need someone to care for your kids while you work, the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) may be able to help with the cost of that childcare. Through the program, you can choose a licensed, certified childcare provider and receive help paying the cost. You will be able to head to work without a concern knowing that your children are well cared for.

Healthcare – If you do not have private healthcare coverage, the Kentucky Children’s Health Insurance Program (KCHIP) may be able to help you provide coverage for your kids. It offers healthcare for some children who are not eligible for Medicaid but cannot get private health insurance either. If your income is considered low income, your entire family may be able to have their healthcare needs met through Medicaid of Kentucky.

Food and Supplies – One of the primary ways the state helps struggling families is through the Food Benefit Program, which helps them purchase healthy food through their local grocery store. Other programs to help with food include WIC (http://www.trdhd.com/) and the Temporary Assistance for Families program. The Kentucky Food Bank is yet another option to consider when looking for affordable supplies and food for your family.

Transportation – As most of Kentucky’s single moms know, getting to and from work is impossible without reliable transportation. If you do not have your own care to use, ask around to see if anyone you live near regularly travels near your place of employment. Sometimes a carpool is the best answer. Kentucky’s public transportation options (http://www.kypublictransit.org/) give you an affordable means of transportation as well.

Rent Assistance - When you are the sole provider, money is often tight. Single moms can turn to the Kentucky Housing Corporation for help in paying their rent. Affordable housing is available through the Project Based Rental Administration and Housing Choice Voucher Programs.

College Grants – Heading back to school may be possible with a grant or scholarship. Start the process by filling out the FAFSA, then turn to the College Access Program for information on other local grants designed for needy students. Consider taking online or night classes so you can work school in around your family responsibilities.

my granddaughter has a young son, she is just now receiving assistance from the state in food stamps and some monetary aid. she is a single mom because of a breakup before the birth of her child, and feels it is best to raise her child without the father, due to safety and psychological issues,
now the state says that she must name the father in order to get state assistance, she is a full time college student and desperately needs some assistance, the father is not, or ever has been involved with the child and she would like to keep it this way. for her sake and that of her child. her family agrees whole heatedly with her decision. can you please give us some information to help? thank-you

Hello I just wanted to know what kind of help I would be able to get due to the fact that I am homeless with two children. I spent the last of my money for us to stay in a hotel just so we were not sleeping in a car out in the heat. I was going to school and I do have a job but I am currently on disability due to some medical issues concerning my heart, back and legs. I have been through heck and back. I have two older children that had to go live with their dad and that is when everything just fell apart. I was receiving some funds from disability through work but paperwork was not turned in on time because my ex roommate (who robbed me) was not giving me my mail. I have applied for everything but there is a 12 month waiting list for housing and I just don’t have that much time. I want to go back to work and school but I have blackouts so the doctor wont release me back to work. They don’t know why I am blacking out, the doc said it could be seizures, so my babies dad does help out with them but we are not together and he has had no luck finding work to help out financially. He also has two other children, so between us that makes six total. I had surgery in February and almost died from that and it was just a routine hysterectomy. I am just at my wits end. I was on Dean’s list in school and then I was not able to keep up with the work because I got sick. I just want my life back. I want my kids back. I have been at the same job for 4 years and I am about to lose my insurance because I can’t afford to pay it. The medical card is not going to cover most of the docs I see and that’s going to cause problems when the time comes. Please what can I do? What do I qualify for? Oh and my car just broke down on me too.
