Help For Single Moms In Louisiana

Single moms sometimes need a little assistance in paying the bills. Living from paycheck to paycheck can sometimes create a shortfall. If you are a single mom living in Louisiana, here are some resources you can use when you need a little extra help.

Childcare – If access to quality childcare is keeping you from getting a good job, consider looking into the Louisiana Child Care Assistance Program. You can receive a subsidy to help pay for childcare while you work, attend school, or look for a job. This includes a traditional childcare center, before or after school care, and even in-home care.

Healthcare - While the Louisiana healthcare system is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, help is available. The Louisiana Medicaid Program helps needy families get access to quality healthcare. If you do not qualify for Medicaid, you may qualify for LaCHIP, which provides coverage for uninsured children until they turn 19.

Food and Supplies - A good diet is the basis for a healthy family. If you cannot afford to put good food on the table on your income alone, consider the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. WIC also helps families with young children, under the age of five, afford healthy foods like milk, cheese, and formula. The state has several food banks that help needy families access affordable food and pantry supplies.
Transportation – You will not be able to keep a good job if you cannot get reliable transportation. LaDOTD offers several programs to help low income individuals get to and from the places they need to go. If you cannot get access to public transportation, try to find someone who works near your place of employment that you can carpool with. Paying gas money from time to time is always more affordable than buying your own vehicle.

Rent Assistance -Recent disasters in the Louisiana area have increased the need for rent assistance for low income families, including those with single moms. The Tenant Based Rental Assistance program (http://www.lhfa.state.la.us/rentalassistpdf) provides temporary housing for families who were displaced from Katrina and more recent storms. Other programs offered through HUD help families get back on their feet and enjoy the freedom of home ownership.

College Grants – The Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOFSA) offers information about college grants available to needy local students. Another option for single moms looking to return to school is the FAFSA, which allows them to apply for federal aid programs. Also be sure to research school scholarships for more financial assistance options.

Take a look at these resources on special needs help programs. It gives an extensive list of programs who may be able to help you out, like the National Dissemination Center or the Child Care Law Center.

I am a single mom with no child support. I have tried to apply for housing assistance, section 8, government housing…….to no avail. Everyone tells me that they are not taking apps. Then to get into income based housing there is a 6-9 month or more waiting period. My youngest is 3 and my 16 year old is pregnant – where are we suppose to live until then. I am currently renting a home with floors that are very dangerous and the air conditioners barely make it livable. This does not make sense to me that there is no help for a working parent who is really trying to survive???????

Susanne,
Sad to say, I come across many emails from women that are in the same situation as you. I don’t know what is going on with the Department of Human Services that they would tell you that “they are not taking apps”. You should keep trying. Talk to someone else. Tell them you want to talk to a supervisor. There is a program called TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). I don’t know if you have heard of this assistance program before. You may also want to check out Hud.gov to see that is offered to you. As for your landlord, you need to pressure him into fixing your floor, which is a safety hazard. The HUD program may be able to help you with dealing with your landlord to get it fixed. Wish you the best.

You can look into contacting HIP which, is housing initiative program. Also, you can receive financial aid for being a single mother.

There are many government agencies that you can go to to look for help with daycare bills. Daycare ends up being very costly, and having that burden off might help you with other bills and payments.
