There are many state assistance programs that you can look for. They differ from state to state but we are sure there are some available.

Student loans have been on the back burner and because of that I have now defaulted. Getting garnished over $300 a month when I couldn't afford the payment that was half of that. The collection agency wants me to pay $200 a month ON TOP of the garnishment in order to get out of collection status. They don't care that I'm about to lose my car over it. Guess I'll lose my job that's 45 mins away when my car gets repossesed since they've now taken that money from me. They won't be able to garnish me if I'm not working. There really is no help for someone like me. I took a job because it was a job and get paid less than cost of living but just enough to disqualify me from any kind of assistance at all. Now I'm choking on the $300 LESS I have every month and still no help. Can't get it to stop and have no idea how I'm supposed to keep going like this. I make sure my child is fed but I can't afford to live like this any longer.

Hello. I am in a situation that is just horrible for myself & for my 5 year old daughter. I've went to the State for help, but was turned down, not eligible for help because I receive $168.00 a month Unemployment. We are homeless. We have no car. I don't eat just so my daughter can. The State wouldn't even help me with Food Stamps because of us being homeless. I am being swallowed alive from depression. I have no support at all, no Family to help me get on my feet. I'm not asking for a handout. I am asking for help to get on my feet & take care of my baby and myself, but everywhere I go for help I get turned away. I am searching for work, but its so hard to get a job when I have no car & nobody to watch my daughter if I was called in for an interview. The hope I had is dwindling down to nothing & I'm terrified that I will lose my daughter, who is my World. She is the only reason I breathe. My only purpose in life & I know she deserves more than I can give her. She would be heart broken if we were separated. I would too, but I don't worry about myself, I worry about my baby. I need help. I am so lost. I've went everywhere for help. Made a million phone calls, written, emailed, did online searches... Absolutely nothing & no one cares to help us. I don't understand why? If anyone has any info for us, please share it. We are in NJ and our situation isn't a healthy happy one. Mental & verbal abuse are what we live everyday of our lives. I pray every night for something to change, something or someone to help us. I know I can't do this on my own. I've been trying for so long now & have had many ups & downs... all leading to where we are now. Stuck.

I can not get help with transportation, therefore it is impossible for me to go on interviews and job searches or take my daughter to the neurologist (she has epilepsy) or her behavioral intervention therapy. I am hanging on a rope and falling fast.

I am also a single mother living in NJ. I have had the most difficult time trying to obtain viable employment. I have also found that because I do not receive TANF, their is NO help for me and my family. Most of the money I receive monthly goes toward rent and their is very little left for utilities, I don't see a way to survive. I have good children who do well in school, despite being teased because of their clothing. I feel like I am indespensable to those who can aid. I don't want a handout, just a chance. Looking in my children's eyes I cry because I can not give to them the basics at times....I am lost

Delilah
I feel exactly the same way. I am a mother against Welfare. I have busted my ass, put myself though college on loans and grants, I have a full time job,and I am now a single mom. I am struggling to pay for decent daycare near my job, I can afford to put on the table for myself, b/c I am choking on the interest rates for my student loans... This country is DISGUSTING!!!!

There's plenty of help out there in the way of housing help. Take a look at our housing assistance articles - they can give you some good information on different programs that can aid you in getting your own place. Also, take a look at our childcare section, since it has quite a bit of help on getting cheaper childcare. Sounds like our transportation articles may be of help to you as well. It details ways to get extremely cheap or free cars. I would also look into some free car clinics in your area. Often, churches, non-profits and high school shop classes will hold workshops every month or so where your car can get fixed for extremely cheap.

I am in the same situation as you are. I am a single mom with 2 kids one who is 7 and the other will be 3. I was a pharmacy tech and was fired dued to being out with hernia surgery. I havent been able to find a job since then. I was living with my dad and then my dad sold his house to my brother and then he allowed us to stay there as long as I gave him $80 a week. Thats alot for me since I only get 167 for the week. I had to get out of the house because I could not pay him. I do have a fiance who also can't find a job right now. We are living with his mother in one room. This is a very hard time and I just cant seem to find the help I need.

I am a single mother who makes slightly above the income requirements for all of the programs mentioned. A well structured, enrichment based child care center costs approximately half of my take home wages. Why are there no programs to help mothers who want more and better for their children? We have to be able to feed them and clothe them and put a clean and safe roof over their head. But for some reason no one takes into consideration that all of that costs money. $800 a month for child care, $600 a month for vehicle costs including insurance and maintenance, $400-600 a month for groceries, including diapers and other toiletries, $300 commuting costs for work including tolls and gasoline. Where am I supposed to come up with rent and utilities when I can't even afford to pay the necessities to work and eat? There are serious downfalls throughout our social system when hardworking people cannot get temporary assistance to help them afford to get started, while others who remain dependent upon the current system perpetually abuse it and are handed the tools to use for the longterm. Its sad and I am at a loss as to what I am supposed to do to provide for my son and I.
