Help For Single Moms In Wisconsin
The state of Wisconsin has several programs that can make life a little more manageable for single moms living there. Whether they need help buying basic necessities or a little additional aid in affording the rent, these programs make it possible to raise kids without the support of another adult in the home.
Childcare - Many single moms find getting a job to be difficult because they cannot afford quality childcare for their kids. The Wisconsin Shares Child Care Subsidy Program offers an option for moms in this situation who are income eligible for the program. This offers subsidized programs for childcare for moms who are seeking work or work training opportunities.
Health Care – Medicaid is the primary healthcare assistance program in the state of Wisconsin for low-income families who do not have access to health care through another source. Children who do not qualify for Medicaid can get health insurance through BadgerCare Plus, which offers healthcare for all children and many families who do not qualify for Medicaid.
Food and Supplies – Single moms who struggle to put healthy food on the table may wish to apply for FoodShare, which offers a debit card that they can use to buy food. If your children are under the age of five, you can get additional help paying for food through WIC. If this is not enough, consider applying for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, which offers a cash benefit to the state’s struggling families. If you do not qualify for these programs, look into a local food bank to find a more affordable option for food and supplies.
Transportation – Single moms who live in one of Wisconsin’s many large cities can benefit from the public transit options (http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/). This eliminates the expense and hassle of owning a car. Those who do not have easy access to public transit may wish to look into carpooling options to cut down on transportation expenses.
Rent Assistance – Wisconsin offers several housing assistance programs through HUD and the Department of Commerce. Low to moderate income families, which many single moms are, can get subsidized apartments, housing choice vouchers, and public housing through these programs.
College Grants - The State of Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board publishes information about financial aid options designed specifically for Wisconsin students. Many single moms can take advantage of these programs to be able to afford continued education. Also, search various school scholarships for even more financial assistance.

My husband & I have been separated perhaps five years ago. We have been living separately since we separated. I don’t asks for his support, because he has two children of to care for. I have two children to care for as well. He lives in a different state. I’m thinking about moving to Wisconsin with my two children. Would that consider myself as a single mom, as we did not file for divorce yet? I will need help. I don’t know if I would be qualify for the above. I’m really desperate for help. Please respond. Thanks.

You can always look into different charities in your area – often they have programs that are much quicker than the government sponsored ones.

I would make sure you’re getting the child support that you need first of all. Just because you may not prefer to have any contact with this man, doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be sending you a check every month. Also, look into the government programs and non-profits in your area.
